Procedure Coding:
Using the ICD-10-PCS

Section X New Technology Codes

The seventh character, called the qualifier, gives more information about the procedure. The type of information specified depends on the section. In Section X, the seventh character is used exclusively for the New Technology section.

The number or letter for the New Technology section changes each year new technology codes are added to the system. For example, Section X codes added for fiscal year 2021 have the seventh character value 6, New Technology Group 6, and codes added the following year have the seventh character value 7, New Technology Group 7.

It allows the section to keep consistency between the root operation and body part values of the other sections and evolve over time as medical technology evolves.

Because the qualifier is only used to show the year the code was created and all codes for particular new technology procedures created in the same year will have the same qualifier, there are no special coding instructions or requirements for using the Section X seventh character.
