Place of Service (POS) Code Set: Requesting New or Modified Codes

How Do I Request New or Modified Codes?

To apply for a new or modified POS code:

  1. Provide all information necessary to support your request, including:
    1. Why is the new or modified place of service code necessary?
    2. Describe the new place of service code setting, including:
      • What services are provided in this setting?
      • Is it an independent setting?
    3. Is there an existing place of service code that has been used for this setting in the past? If so, which code was used previously and why doesn’t it meet your current needs?
    4. What description do you recommend for the new or modified place of service code?
  2. Provide your name, telephone number, and e-mail address.
  3. Submit this information by emailing posrequest@cms.hhs.gov. We’ll contact you if we need clarification or additional information to consider your request. Submit a separate request for each new code or modification.

What Happens After I Submit a Request?

When we get your complete request, we’ll share it with subject matter experts who will analyze the:

  • Appropriateness of, and business need for, the requested code
  • The requested code’s effect on existing POS codes and descriptions
  • Impact of the proposed coding change on health care payors

Approved codes are posted in the place of service code set.
