  • In 2022, a greater proportion of non-metropolitan beneficiaries were under 65 years of age (15 percent) compared to metropolitan beneficiaries (11 percent). The proportion of beneficiaries who were 85 years and over does not vary by metropolitan residence status.
  • In 2022, beneficiaries living in non-metropolitan areas were more likely to have lost all of their natural teeth (23 percent) compared to beneficiaries living in metropolitan areas (15 percent).
  • In 2022, beneficiaries living in non-metropolitan areas were more likely to experience chronic pain every day (28 percent) compared to beneficiaries in metropolitan areas (22 percent).
  • In 2022, beneficiaries living in non-metropolitan areas reported traveling farther to see their primary care provider; 15 percent of non-metropolitan beneficiaries reported traveling more than 30 minutes compared to just 8 percent of metropolitan beneficiaries.
