Transparency

Transparency

People deserve to know how much they'll pay to visit a doctor or hospital. Along with our colleagues at CMS, the Digital Service at CMS (DSAC) is working to make that happen.

Our Work

Hospital Price Transparency

Hospital price transparency (HPT) helps people in the U.S. understand the cost of hospital items or services before making a decision about their health care. Since Jan 1, 2021, CMS has required every U.S. hospital to provide clear, accessible, online pricing information about the items and services they offer in two formats: a machine-readable file and as a consumer-friendly display. By embracing a human-centered approach, DSAC built an open source tool that helps hospitals post clear pricing data on their websites.

Open Source Program Office

Since January 2022, people without health insurance have been entitled to an estimate for the cost of treatment before receiving care–and have a path to dispute a bill that is above that estimate. DSAC worked hand-in-hand with our partners all across CMS to help people understand their new rights.  Learn more about our Open Source Program Office.
