CMS announces 50 new ICD-10-PCS codes (PDF), effective April 1, 2025

On October 1, 2015, the health care industry transitioned from ICD-9 to ICD-10 codes for diagnoses and inpatient procedures. Use ICD-10 to code services provided on or after October 1, 2015. ICD-10 applies to all parties covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), not just providers who bill Medicare or Medicaid.

2025 ICD-10 CM & PCS files

2025 ICD-10-CM files

These files include updates for FY 2025. Use these codes for discharges occurring from October 1, 2024 – September 30, 2025, and for patient encounters occurring from October 1, 2024 – September 30, 2025.

2025 ICD-10-PCS files

These files include updates for FY 2025. Use these codes for discharges occurring from October 1, 2024 – September 30, 2025.

2024 ICD-10 CM & PCS files

2024 ICD-10-CM files

These files include updates for FY 2024. Use these codes for discharges occurring from October 1, 2023 – September 30, 2024 and for patient encounters occurring from October 1, 2023 – September 30, 2024.

The ICD-10-CM April 1, 2024 update addresses typographical errors. There are no new diagnosis codes being implemented. The files below contain information on the ICD-10-CM updates effective with discharges on and after April 1, 2024.

2024 ICD-10-PCS files

These files include updates for FY 2024. Use these codes for discharges occurring from October 1, 2023 – September 30, 2024.

The updated ICD-10-PCS code files include 41 new procedure codes effective April 01, 2024. 

Note:
There is no FY 2024 GEMs file. As stated in the FY 2016 IPPS/LTCH PPS final rule (80 FR 49388), the GEMs have been updated on an annual basis as part of the ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee meetings process and will continue to be updated for approximately 3 years after ICD-10 is implemented.
2023 ICD-10 CM & PCS files

2023 ICD-10-CM files

These files include updates for FY 2023. Use these codes for discharges occurring from October 1, 2022 – September 30, 2023 and for patient encounters occurring from October 1, 2022 – September 30, 2023.

Effective April 1, 2023, the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) implemented 42 new diagnosis codes into the ICD-10-CM. These codes help collect health-related social needs (HRSNs) – an individual’s unmet, adverse social conditions that contribute to poor health outcomes.

2023 ICD-10-PCS files

These files include updates for FY 2023. Use these codes for discharges occurring from October 1, 2022 – September 30, 2023.

The updated ICD-10-PCS code files include 34 new procedure codes effective April 01, 2023.

Note:
There is no FY 2023 GEMs file. As stated in the FY 2016 IPPS/LTCH PPS final rule (80 FR 49388), the GEMs have been updated on an annual basis as part of the ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee meetings process and will continue to be updated for approximately 3 years after ICD-10 is implemented.

2022 ICD-10-CM files

These files include updates for FY 2022. Use these codes for discharges occurring from October 1, 2021 – September 30, 2022 and for patient encounters occurring from October 1, 2021 – September 30, 2022.

In response to the COVID-19 public health emergency, the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) implemented 3 new diagnosis codes, Z28.310, Z28.311 and Z28.39, into the ICD-10-CM, for reporting COVID-19 vaccination status effective April 1, 2022.

The files below contain information on the ICD-10-CM updates effective with discharges on and after April 1, 2022.

2022 ICD-10-PCS files

These files include updates for FY 2022. Use these codes for discharges occurring from October 1, 2021 – September 30, 2022.

In response to the COVID-19 public health emergency, CMS implemented 9 new procedure codes into the ICD-10-PCS to describe the introduction or infusion of therapeutics, including vaccines for COVID-19 treatment, effective April 1, 2022.

The files below contain information on the ICD-10-PCS COVID-19 updates effective with discharges on and after April 1, 2022. Additional files containing information related to 2 newer procedure codes is located below as ERRATA.

These files include updates for FY 2021. Use these codes for discharges occurring from October 1, 2020 – September 30, 2021.
