Types of Data Files

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) makes certain data products and data files available to external stakeholders as allowed by federal laws, regulations, and CMS policy.  

 

Public Data Products 

CMS produces a variety of de-identified public data products including public use files, data tables, dashboards, and mapping tools. These public data products are freely available on CMS’ open data websites.

Controlled Unclassified Information 

Controlled unclassified information contains protected health information, personally identifiable information, or other controlled information. Controlled unclassified information is available to CMS contractors as necessary to fulfill the terms of their contract, researchers conducting approved studies, qualified entities evaluating provider performance, and other government agencies if permitted/required by law.
