Highlights:

  • Among Medicare beneficiaries living in the community in 2022, 89 percent received Social Security, 47 percent received a pension, 16 percent had earnings from employment, and 7 percent received Supplemental Security Income.
  • In 2022, median household income was $49,904. Median household income was $59,982 for White non-Hispanic beneficiaries, $23,901 for Black non-Hispanic beneficiaries, and $20,640 for Hispanic beneficiaries.
  • Among Medicare beneficiaries living in the community, 14 percent had trouble getting places. Approximately 27 percent of beneficiaries under 65 years and 25 percent of beneficiaries aged 85 years and over had trouble getting places (compared with 9 percent of beneficiaries in the 65 to 74 age group and 12 percent of beneficiaries in the 75 to 84 age group).
  • In 2022, 17 percent of Medicare beneficiaries living in the community were food insecure. Beneficiaries who had trouble paying medical bills in the last 12 months were more likely to be food insecure (56 percent) compared with beneficiaries who had no trouble paying medical bills (14 percent).
