Action Plan

Unexpected high medical bills are frustrating. Follow these steps to figure out if your provider was in-network when you got care, then take action.

Check your explanation of benefits.

The explanation of benefits lists the different medical services you got. It also lets you know if a service was in or out-of-network.

Check your health plan’s provider directory.

Go to your health insurance company's website. Look for their list of providers, called a "provider directory."

Search for your provider in the directory. They're in-network if you see them on the list.

Call your health insurance company if you don’t see your provider listed.

Provider directories aren’t always accurate.

Call your health insurance company if you don’t see your provider in the directory. Ask if your provider was in-network when you got care.

Take action.

Now you know if your provider was in your health plan’s network or not.
