National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes

We at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and our partners have continuously worked to:

• Enhance the quality of life for people living with dementia
• Protect them from substandard care
• Promote goal-directed, person-centered care for every nursing home resident 
• Increase the use of non-pharmacologic approaches and person-centered dementia care practices

Through the efforts of the National Partnership, we’ve significantly reduced the use of antipsychotic medications when not clinically indicated.

Nursing homes can get support to improve resident safety, reduce potential harm, improve care, and reduce the use of antipsychotic medications by finding and contacting their Quality Innovation Network-Quality Improvement Organization (QIN-QIO).
